Advocate for equal rights?
Hey, that means:
Girls must serve National Service for 2 years, and then be ORD for the next 10 years.
Your reply is:
“Every person deserves access to housing, education and healthcare, because these are basic requirements for human sustenance and social participation. AWARE disagrees strongly with any link between support for fundamental needs and an individual’s status as an NSman, especially when the military may not be suitable for many people, regardless of their gender. AWARE has long maintained that military service should not be held up as the single gold standard of citizen belonging – an approach which this proposal threatens to intensify, creating different tiers of people with different social entitlements and worth.”
YES! everyone deserves access to housing, education and healthcare, these are basic human rights.
Our men sacrifice 2 years of their time which they could have invested on their careers or their education. Not to mention, the reservist liability which they have for the next 10 years.
The least you can do is to ease their concerns in regards to all this.
You lost 2 years, which means you have lesser experiences, which in turn means you are disadvantaged in terms of going up the career ladder. As such, to make up for these disadvantages, we can try to help them by easing the financial burdens, which are the consequences of serving NS.
Plus, its not like the government is saying “we shall only aid the NS men”. They are financial assistance schemes to help the poor too. The Pioneer Generation Package, CHAS assist the poor in healthcare, education are also subsidise by the government. These are all accessible to citizens of Singapore.
Remember, time is something no men, no matter how rich or powerful, can ever get back. In a country like Singapore, 2 years is very valuable. Woman get 2 year advantage over their man counterpart in terms of work experience or their university education. Isn’t this already an inequality?
The best a country could do for the men who serve is to give certain benefits to make up the time that they have served.
So, AWARE Singapore, if you are a true advocate for equal rights, why not advocate NS for woman, so that the men and women of Singapore can be on a fair playing field.
Because its like my good friend Siti is given a cake by our neighbour because she helped to clear the trash for him for two years. Siti do not like clearing the trash, but she did so out of a sense of duty. The cake is to reward her for her work. I did not do any work, but I went around telling the whole neighbourhood that Siti do not deserve the cake. It should be given to everyone, including me (but of course, I don’t really want to clear my neighbour’s trash, I just want the cake). If not, we will think that you are just a sour grape.
